Re: Island Hoppers 001 (COMPLETED)
[Milo speaking to Helena Voss]
Yo, Mrs. V!
Tasty Chicken Island’s got mad resources! That’s what Mr. Houston called it – Tasty Chicken – cuz he said he didn’t care what we called it, and cuz there were a lot of big birds on the island.
He talked to the big birds, and they told him that if we weren’t food, then we should go away. That’s what he said they said, but all I heard was them squawkin’ at each other. Anyway, they looked like Axebeaks (the birds did, not Mr H), but not like the Axebeaks back home. These dudes had, like, multicolored feathers, and they had a bunch of eggs.
We were thinking maybe we could eat Axebeaks, or their eggs, or maybe we could tame them and have an Axebeak ranch. Or maybe we could tame them and ride around on their backs into battle! That would be sick!
But there were a lot of them, so we took the birds’ advice for now and sailed to a different beach. The birds also told us there were others like us on the island, but when Mr H went scouting, he saw huge frog-flipper tracks. Spoiler alert: there are frog people on the island. So, not like us, it turns out.
While he was scouting, me and Erlingr dug for clams on the beach, while Mr Claevage kept watch. Mr C’s got skills, yo! He can keep watch with his eyes closed! And, check it out: I got mad clam-digging skills, cuz here’s enough clams for 3 meals!
When Mr H came back, we followed him into the rainforest. We found some huts in a clearing; there were lots of flipper tracks around, but no sign of anyone. We looked inside the huts, and Erlingr found this spear! Mr C said it was a masterwork steel spear, so we don’t think it was made by the frog people. It also had a symbol on it. The symbol looked like a trident coming out of the water, but I pointed out that if you turn it upside down, it kinda looks like a chicken foot. Coincidence?
We followed the tracks through the jungle, and there was a clearing at the foot of the mountain. Mr H went ahead to scout it out again, and what did he find? You guessed it! Frog people.
They were, like, meditating on the mountainside, but seeing Mr H must have killed the vibe, cuz they attacked him. Bro! They were Kung Fu Frogs!! I kinda blacked out during the fight, but when I came to, the frog people were all dead, and everyone said I did a great job!
We climbed up the mountainside a bit, and there was a cave, and there was a sacrificial altar in the cave, so we decided to bounce.
On the way back, I found these 4 edible mushroom samples. We gathered as much soil and as much dead wood as we could carry, cuz I thought we could use that stuff to start farming our own mushrooms to help feed everyone. Do you know how to grow mushrooms, Mrs V? I know how a little, but I don’t want to mess this up. Maybe Mr Goodbar knows how? Those old halflings LOVE growing mushrooms.
Tasty Chicken Island slaps! 10 of 10, would revisit!

Re: Island Hoppers 001 (COMPLETED)
"...left without me, they did! Even knowing we was going back to some of the same area. Zenitha is certainly the kind of woman to manhandle a bunch of ne'er-do-wells, but seein' as we both still got our teeth knocked in the last time we were at the fountain, they'd better have tighter ranks without Big Sis to prop them up when they start a fight.
Anyway! What was I on about? Right, Tasty Chicken Isle.
Which is a supposition, by the way; nobody actually ate one of the axebeaks. Caleb rowed us right up to the beach without wrecking the whole bleeding thing (which is good as I hate swimming, all this muscle sinks straight to the bottom) and Torbin used some kind of arcanery to speak with the sharp ostriches. Between you and me, that squawk coming out his mug was simply disturbing. We elected to leave them be for now, ignoring everyone's temptation to see if they could be domesticated, finding a smaller beach to land on. Torbin scouted ahead for about an hour while we gathered various samples and leavings of mussels on the beach because if Lil' Brightwater is an empty tankard of life, this island's cup runneth over. Oh yeah, Torbin's otter cleaned up the beach for food too, thing hasn't vocalized a decibel to any of us the whole time.
Torbin came back and we followed a path gradually up and to the mountain, where the axebeaks had said there was some things like us. The path had prints of rather large bipedal frogs, lead to a small clearing with some raised thatch huts, and newly minted adventurer Milo found a really cool steel spear. Not just the tip, either, whole damn thing gleamed and had the shield/trident thing we've seen in a couple other spots. I gave my sketch to Thalia, you'll have to ask her if you want to see it. The spear was either slightly load-bearing in the hut or just propped up in there, but we stole it because that's kind of been the Empire's thing since the outset and greed looks like virtue when it's been institutionalized. Decided to follow the path to the mountain, what do you know but there's some frogmen lazing about on some switchbacks cut into the rock, meditating.
Torbin picks that exact moment to noisily step on a twig, and thus we start diplomatic relations. These frogs knew some moves, but its hard to fight when you're chopped in half (not impossible, mind, ask the purple worms). The leader had some acid to throw, melted a nice patch of trees and sent Milo straight unconscious. Not enough. After, we found another of those steel spears on them and a vial of some oil. Milo proved to be a hardy halfling as he came to of his own accord later with none of our assistance. Which was just about necessary, considering we had no healer on hand. Should maybe look into figuring out everything we need to start brewing those healing potions and getting after it. We go up the switchbacks, see what's clearly an altar for sacrifices. We keep ascending.
Finally up top, we saw a good view of the area. Tasty Chicken Isle is probably 2x3 miles, maybe 5 miles from Prima Statio. There is a cloud of fog surrounding the mainland looking more like a curtain with how tightly it adheres to the coastline. Don't know if it's natural, and I doubt it. Someone wanted that continent hidden or contained, maybe both...light coming off the fog does make for a lovely sunset. Maybe if I get good enough at this drawing bit I can come back and capture it.
Not too shabby an outing, overall. Right chuffed to acquire one of those spears, and Milo came back with various fungi for food, potentially some other endeavors. Assuming any of the other party comes back, they should join us for the next island."

Re: Island Hoppers 001 (COMPLETED)
Expedition: Island Exploration for Resource Acquisition and Study of Unnatural and Natural Phenomena, 9th Day of Springrise of Year 1
Crew: Brunhildo Claevage, Torbin Houston, Milo, and Erlingr Bludwirth with support from Sailor Caleb
Major Findings: The northwestern island from port, henceforth named Tasty Chicken Island. Breeding colony for axebeaks with unique plumage. Mussels and clams for food on shoreline. Jungle to provide wood and foraging opportunities. Surviving colony of violent Frogmen. Masterwork spear with crest of a trident rising from water. Unmarked sacrificial altar.
Full Account:
Departure: The party left port early on day 9 of Springrise upon a trireme piloted by sailor Caleb. Approximately 100 meters from port a definitive boundary is felt. The fog and overcast gray skies lift and sounds and evidence of life returns. We observed an approaching storm front pass the boundary. Once it struck the boundary, the wind immediately stilled and humid air became fog.
Upon reaching the island we made a circuit to get a lay of the land. It is approximately 2 miles wide and 3 miles long of black basalt. The northern shore has the best sandy shore for landings with smaller beaches on the east and west sides. The Southern face is black basalt that would make a difficult but possible climb.
Northern Beach: Upon landing on the northern beach we encountered multiple nesting axebeaks with unique plumage. (meta: similar to a toucan). Torbin spoke with them and found them to be uncooperative. There are yearlings and eggs but no fledglings yet. Perhaps it is possible to collect some eggs, incubate them and raise the hatchlings. We may need to disarm them to raise safely. However, at that time so as to not start a fight we sailed to the west beach.
West Beach: Landing on the west beach wasn't as easy but no encounters. We took a break to gather clams and mussels. While we did that, Torbin scouted into the forest. He returned once finding tracks of large bipedal frogs. The group followed them to a clearing of about 5 huts. All the huts seemed well made of worked wood and thatch roofs sitting 2ft off the ground. In one hut an all metal spear was found having been used as a support for the roof. Further inspection of the spear showed it to be of masterwork quality with a crest showing a shield emblazoned with a trident rising from water (m: was told similar to priest vestments but can't find it in any histories). Nothing of interest was found in other huts, no food or tools interestingly. Leading from the huts were tracks of about 20 frogmen. There are two main paths out of the clearing. One leading east with tracks of about 8 individuals and a southern path towards the mountain showing 12 individuals. We traveled down the mountain path.
Mountain: Following the upward sloping path to the mountain lead to a clearing. Torbin lead and saw 5 frogmen meditating on the cliffside and a carved path leading up the side. The frogmen spoke some unintelligible language vaguely elvish (m:sylvian). Showing their savage nature they attacked us. They fought well especially their apparent leader. Their leader fought using magic and brought down Milo. We came out wounded but victorious. After spending some time recovering we ascending the mountain path. At its summit was a small cave containing a sacrificial altar. The only markings were blood grooves to collect and drain the blood to the head of the table. Clearly a site of their profane and vile blood rituals.
Final Findings: 2 masterwork spears of unknown origin but not of the frogmen's makings. A twine belt with steel flask containing healing potion. Clams/mussels for 4 meals, 2 dead snakes.
Historically the frogmen had been found in the great southern swamps of the Empire but refused to join. As the Empire required, the frogmen were then removed to make way for a better future for the area and none have been seen until now. Thankfully the frogmen of this island appear to be quite primitive and little threat to the empire or our new found land, for now.
Future Research: Where are the rest of the frogmen? Where did they get the spears? More magic to be found at the altar or on island? Can we tame axebeaks for mount or food? Plenty of resources to use.
